Selection Objectives for Library Media Material

Objectives of Selection - The primary objective of the school’s educational media center is to implement, enrich, and support the educational program of the school. The center shall provide a wide range of materials on all levels of difficulty, with diversity of appeal, and the representation of different points of view. The School Board asserts that the responsibility of the media center is to provide:

  1. Instructional and supplemental materials that will enrich and support the curriculum, taking into consideration the varied interest, abilities, and maturity levels of the students being served.
  1. Materials that will stimulate growth in factual knowledge, literary appreciation, aesthetic values, and ethical standards.
  1. A background of information enabling students to make intelligent judgments in their daily life.
  1. Materials on opposing sides of controversial issues in order that students may develop, under guidance, the practice of critical analysis of all media.
  1. Materials representative of the many religious, ethnic, and cultural groups and their contributions to the heritage and culture of America and the world.
  1. A comprehensive collection appropriate for the users of the media center placing principle above personal opinion and reason above prejudice in the selection of materials of the highest quality.

Role of the Library Media Committee

The role of the library media committee is to provide input for the school's library media center collection development as well as consultation for books and other material being considered for addition to the school library media center student use but can include instructional use.  The committee is comprised of school community stakeholders and led by the school's Library Media Specialist.  Input from the committee will be used to guide collection development goals regarding community standards, readers' interest, and academic needs.  In selecting material, the committee shall adhere to the selection principles outlined in SB Policy 4.22. The committee will have scheduled meetings once per quarter and on demand as needed.
